What is diploma course in engineering?

A diploma course in engineering includes:

The study of basic engineering concepts. It offers all the essential specializations, such as civil engineering, electronics engineering, electrical engineering, and IT and computer engineering, just like the degree courses. Students can then choose the subject that they are interested in. It is a known course, planned so that students can get a job in the engineering field once they get their diplomas.

Many students decide to pursue the course of diploma engineering as it allows them a direct ticket to the second year Bachelor of Engineering degree, that is why it is also known to be the ‘backdoor to engineering degree’. The student also gets one more advantage of bypassing the requirement to pass engineering entrance exams like the CET (Common Entrance Test).

The students may not have to pursue Class XI and Class XII exams. Rather than a ‘2 years (junior college) + 4 years (engineering degree course) = 6 years’ plan, the same qualification is gained in the same number of time with first a ‘3 years (diploma course) + 3 years (direct second year engineering course) = 6 years’.

How the diploma to degree course journey take place

10 percentage of the total seats of the second year of the Engineering degree course are saved for diploma students, depending upon the kind of diploma course they have pursued.

After the completion of the third year of a diploma course, a merit list of all students requesting admission to the second year of the engineering is prepared. Then a centralized method of admission takes place, wherein the student with the rank on the list is permitted to choose which degree college he would like to go for.

In other words, the topper of the list gets first preference to pick where he/ she wants to complete an engineering degree. If your rank is lower on the list, it is less likely that you will get entrance to the college of your preference; you will be dropped down with restricted options if you don’t perform well in your diploma exams.

The academic patterns are categorized into two types:

Yearly pattern: In a diploma course backing this pattern, the engineering board exams are carried only once a year. This course is of three year course and students of this course get a reservation of eight percent in the second year of an engineering degree course.

Semester pattern: In a diploma course backing this pattern, the board exams are carried twice a year. It is a course of four-year three years of education, and a one-year internship in industry. Students from this course get a two percent reservation for the second year of an engineering degree course.

Out of the reserved seats for both yearly and semester diploma, half are merit places, and the other half have to be paid. Thus for a yearly program of 100, out of the eight seats, four will be merit seats, and the other four will be paid for. For a semester pattern course of 100, on the other hand, out of two reserved seats, one will have to be paid.
